Anyone have tips for using a REALLY old Rainbow Vacuum system?

I 'the VE had it cleaned and repaired by a technician and I' the VE has sometimes used vacuum my carpet. The instructions say something about the addition of fragrance to the basin of water, but to I was wondering if it was a good idea to add vinegar to water?
